What’s the job?

As Duty Engineer, you’ll manage the engineering/maintenance of your hotel and ensure the safety and comfort of hotel guests and team members. You’ll be a master multitasker and be comfortable with any repair needs. Motivating and training your team with the skills to keep hotel always looking its best. You may also have responsibility for the Loss Prevention function. Your roles and responsibilities may include but not limited to the following.

Your day-to-day

You are responsible for ensuring that routine maintenance is performed in order for the Hotels equipment to be operated with maximum efficiency to achieve customer and guest satisfaction under the general direction of the Engineer Manager, and within the limits of established Holiday Inn Express Singapore Clarke Quay and hotel’s policies and procedures. You will also help to promote a desired work culture around our Winning Ways of the IHG Hotels & Resorts and embrace the IHG Commitment.

FINANCIAL RETURNS:

  • Ensure the effective financial management of the maintenance department by setting maintenance budgets, capital works program’s and engineering plans and ensuring that performance against there is regularly monitored and reviewed.
  • Responsible for the general cost control aspects of maintenance, the preparation of departmental cost budgets and their implementation and submission to management.
  • Assist in control of Capital Projects, in liaison with management, to ensure capital funding is effectively allocated and budgeted in accordance with company directives and philosophy.
  • Contribute to the hotel’s profitability by ensuring the effective management of the buildings environmental controls and energy conservation systems. Evaluate, control and record energy usage and implement and upgrade energy conservation systems.
  • Works with Finance & Business Support Manager in the preparation and management of the Department’s budget.
  • Assist the Engineering Manager in developing annual budgets and follow-up to achieve reasonable control.
  • To effectively manage all engineering inventory through a robust stocktaking and planning process.
  • To review all maintenance contracts in a timely manner. 

PEOPLE:

  • Assist to Direct daily engineering needs, plan and assign work ensuring you always have the right team in place.
  • Develop your team and improve their performance through coaching and feedback, and create performance and development goals for colleagues - recognize good performance.
  • Recommend or initiate any Human Resources related actions where needed.
  • Ensure a safe and secure environment for guests, team members in compliance with regulatory policies and procedures.
  • Maintain relations with outside contacts including guests, regulatory agencies, internal and external vendors, and others as needed.
  • Ensure the staff awareness of energy management within the property by conducting regular education and training programs on energy conservation and matters related to efficient operation of equipment in a cost-effective fashion.
  • Contribute to the effectiveness of management decision making by representing the maintenance department at management meetings and staff meetings and by ensuring regular liaison with heads of other departments.

GUEST EXPERIENCE:

  • Contribute to guest satisfaction standards by ensuring that technical support services quickly address, and where possible, anticipate, individual needs.
  • Ensure the safety and comfort of guests and that any requests for service are handled in a courteous and efficient fashion.
  • Ensure the effective operation of all the mechanical and electrical systems and equipment by implementing and managing a preventative maintenance program. 
  • Closely monitor the condition of the physical property and equipment by conducting continual inspections of the building.
  • Ensure that preventative maintenance schedules are in operation and regularly upgraded.
  • Assist guests needs to ensure their satisfaction.
  • Use a maintenance programme to ensure the hotel is maintained and in service for our guests.
  • To take the lead on projects and guide the team to success, working alongside the Engineering Manager to ensure effective execution and operational excellence.

RESPONSIBLE BUSINESS:

  • Monitor, implement and administer an energy management program by establishing energy reduction objectives, the maintenance of records and regular reporting of performance against these objectives.
  • Ensure adherence to all statutory regulations and fire codes by regularly reviewing policies and safety procedures. Ensure that any tests and inspections required on plant by statutory authorities are carried out as and when required and that all records and documentation associated with such tests and surveys are correctly kept and/or displayed. Ensure that the hotel fulfils all compliance requirements.
  • Maintain the condition of the physical assets of the hotel by carrying out any upgrading and project work in liaison with architects, interior designers and management.
  • Contribute to a high standard of quality control within the hotel by actively participating in the hotel’s Quality Assurance Program.
  • Ensure the cost effectiveness and technical efficiency of all services performed by outside contracts by close supervision.  Ensure all work is carried out in accordance with contracts, leases, services agreements and warranties.
  • Ensure the quality of all work completed by both employees and external contracted staff adheres to the standards of good engineering practice.
  • Be aware of duty of care and adhere to occupational, health and safety legislation, policies and procedures.
  • Be familiar with property safety, first aid and fire and emergency procedures and operate equipment safely and sensibly.
  • Take action to correct a hazardous situation and notify supervisors of potential dangers.
  • A weekly & monthly report will be prepared and submitted to the Hotel management.
  • To liaise with the contractor on the maintenance and inspection of the fire protection equipment (include firefighting equipment) for Holiday Inn Express Singapore Clarke Quay and to render assistance / advice for the occupiers in the building.
  • Maintain and order parts and supplies whilst minimising waste and maintaining “green” initiatives.
  • Responsible for updating and keep on track on Green Engage and Hotel energy reduction opportunity (HERO) Tool. 
  • Responsible to ensure the work quality by regularly monitor the work output. 
  • To assume overall responsibility for engineering operations and decision-making in the absence of the Engineering Manager, ensuring seamless functionality and operational efficiency. 
  • Any other reasonable request within your range of competence as required by Engineering Manager and Management.
What we need from you
  • Bachelor’s degree / Diploma in Engineering or equivalent, plus 3 years of engineering experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Communication skills are utilized a significant amount of time when interacting with others; demonstrated ability to interact with customers, employees and third parties that reflects highly on the hotel, the brand and the Company. 
  • Has good communication and writing skills. 
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office. 
  • Possesses problem solving, reasoning, motivating, organizational and training abilities. Proactive and takes ownership with hotel maintenance equipment/inventory management.
